Realizing importance of Research and Development activities, department motivates and encourages students and faculty members to take up appropriate research problems concerning civil engineering practices by the way of student projects and faculty doctoral research programmes.
Mr. B.S. MUNJAL, Scientist ISRO has completed
his Ph.D. under guidance of Dr. H.V. Trivedi,
Head, Academic & Research, Institute of
Technology, Nirma University, on the topic of
“ The finite element analysis, design
& development of Smart, Skin Space Craft
Composite Antenna Reflector Structures”.
Seismic survey of Ahmedabad Region
Department has taken up a Collaborative Research Project with IIT, Delhi, for the Seismic survey of Ahmedabad Region. A joint collaborative research project between IIT, Delhi and Civil Engineering Dept., Institute of Technology, Nirma University has been initiated to conduct seismic survey of Ahmedabad to understand the problem of Ahmedabad seismicity, so as to mitigate future earthquake related problems. Prof. S.S. TRIVEDI is working in this area of research.
Studies on Durability of Fiber Reinforced Concrete
Presently concrete technology laboratory is actively involved in studies of durability of fiber reinforced concrete, which is being used to increase ductility and energy absorption capacity of concrete. Fibers considered for concrete have included steel, glass, aramid, carbon, polyacrylonitrile, polypropylene and natural organic (cellulose), and inorganic (asbestos) fibers. Prof U.V. DAVE is working in this area of research.
Dr. P.H SHAH has recently completed his doctoral research work in Geotechnical Engineering area on the topic of Some Studies of Electrical Properties of Soils. This work has been published in 4 papers in journals of ASTM international and research in this area will be continued further.
Prof. P.V. PATEL has recently completed his research in Application of Parallel and Distributed Processing in Structural Engineering and obtained his Ph.D. from the M.S. University of BARODA. Based on his research work about 10 papers has been published in national and international conference.
Shock Table Test
Civil Engineering Department had organized successfully – a series of technical tests for earth quake resistance masonry buildings, named as ‘Shock Table Test’ with the National Center for Peoples’-Action In Disaster Preparedness NCPDP, Ahmedabad. The Shock Table is a facility developed jointly by NCPDP and our department. It is funded by D.S.T.
– New Delhi. The objective of facility is to
carry out test on model of masonry buildings.
This kind of tests is useful to build people’s
confidence in quake resistant building
technologies including the retrofitting of
existing houses and is aimed to enhance the
understanding of the performance of simple
structures, with and without the earthquake
resisting features under the impact of an
earthquake
