Institute of Law, Nirma University, jointly with National Council for Climatic Change, Sustainable Development and Public Leadership (NCCSD) organized an International Conference on ‘Strengthening Climatic Justice Initiatives: Livelihood Challenges at Local Level with a focus on Farmers’ on November 8th and 9th, 2014.

The Conference was inaugurated in the esteemed presence of the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, Justice Mr. H. L. Dattu and the Governor of the State of Gujarat, His Excellency Shri. O P Kohli. The inaugural function was attended by various present and retired judges of Supreme Court and High Court of Gujarat along with other eminent dignitaries such as Justice Mr. V M Sahai, Hon’ble Acting Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court, and Justice B P Singh, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India & President of NCCSD, Senior Counsel Adv. Dushyant Dave, Justice C.K. Thakkar & Justice Panchal, retired judges, Supreme Court of India, to name a few.

The Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, H.L Dattu stated that agriculture is an integral part of who we are as a society and as a nation. He emphasized that we should be convinced by scientific reasons than believe on empty rhetoric and called for accepting an approach which is capable enough to reduce the climatic pressure and also to safeguard and sustain the interests of small and marginalized farmers.

The Conference was attended by more than 150 farmers from Gujarat and the surrounding States, along with sixty scientists and researchers from fifteen various organizations and agricultural universities. Total Fifteen law universities, ten national-level universities, ten International organizations, Seventy students and faculty of law universities of India participated and total participation was nearly three hundred.  

The Hon’ble Acting Chief Justice of High Court of Gujarat, Justice Mr. V.M. Sahai  mentioned that there is a need to bring back old wisdom of the Vedas and learn from them while taking statutory actions to preserve environment. He stated that if proper mechanism for assessing carbon credit is put in place agriculture activity in India will emit zero pollutants and strengthen industries by reducing their pollution as there will be an increase in green cover.

His Excellency the Governor of Gujarat, Shri Om Prakash Kohli while addressing the gathering said that if we look at the modern world we can see that during the last few decades the world has made tremendous progress but this development has caused serious environmental damages impairing the quality of life not only of our generations but of future generations also. We should meet our own needs without compromising with future generations.

A book on “Climate Smart Agriculture-The Indian Perspective” was also launched at the function which consisted experiences of several farmers and scientists.

The conference had 3 technical sessions, 3 plenary sessions and a farmers’ interaction along with round table meet where theme paper of the Conference was deliberated on. The Conference also had a women’s meet where issues and challenges regarding women farmers were discussed.

The Valedictory function was graced with the presence of various delegates from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. The Presidential Address was given by Hon’ble Justice B.P. Singh, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India & President of NCCSD.

9 important dimensions and 21 recommendations were a result of the deliberations of the conference which will be presented before the Conference in Peru, in near future. The recommendations were given by the various delegate speakers and guest of honour, such as Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, Justice H.L. Dattu, Acting Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court Justice V.M Sahai, Dr. Gopi Chandran, Director-Gyan Prasar, Noida, Mr. Robert Jordan, Organic Farming Consultant from Britain, Dr. Ashvini Chauhan, Florida A & M University, Ms. Abena Ojetayo, Chief Sustainability Officer and Executive Director-Sustainability Institute, Florida A & M University, Daniel Gimshi, Associate Professor, College Of Management, College of Management, Rishon Le Zion, Israel among other eminent scientists, farmers and academicians.

On this occasion, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the delegates of Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University and NCCSD for the mutual exchange of information, technical assistance and public policy drafting.

The Institute of Science, Nirma University celebrated its Foundation Day on September 06, 2014.  Dr. Anup K. Singh, Director General, Nirma University, presided over the meeting and delivered the presidential address.Dr. K.V. S. Rao from the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (IGCEB), New Delhi was invited as the Chief Guest.  Prof. Sarat Dalai, Director, Institute of Science, delivered the welcome address. He delivered a lecture on 'The Comparative Interplay between Host and Pathogen in TB Infection'.  The other invited distinguished guest, Dr. Akanksha Chaturvedi, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, spoke on 'Integrating the B Cell Receptor & Toll like Receptor Signalling'.  As a part of the Women Development Cell, ISNU she gave a special talk on ‘Women & Science’ emphasizing the contribution of women scientists in various field of science. It was followed by ‘Tree Planting’ activity at the Institute.  Scientific posters prepared by the students of the Institute were also displayed. Felicitations were given to Research Scholars, Faculty and Staff for their contribution towards the development of the Institute. The day concluded with a cultural programmes by the students of the Institute.

Nirma University has been accorded recognition as Scientific & Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR), Department of Science & Technology, Government of India with effect from May 30, 2014. The long and excellent record of research done at Nirma University has brought this coveted recognition and it will also make us eligible to apply for research grants at various agencies, and avail exemption in customs duty, central excise duty on purchases related to research.

Founded in 2014 and led by Prof. Utpal Sharma, the Institute of Architecture, Nirma University hosted its inaugural on August 1, 2014. Padmashri Dr Karsanbhai K. Patel, President NU, presided over the function along with Chief Guest- eminent architect and educationist, Padmashri Dr B. V. Doshi and Prof Uday Gadkari, President, Council of Architecture.

The organization of the five year B. Arch programme aims in enchantment and mobilization of creative thinking from initial years, progressing to next dimension of design with environment and society. The course includes modules of site and town planning with regulations and context study in addition to varied subjects of landscape, urban design, interior design and sustainability in subsequent semesters. Final two years will be building practical base by facilitating one year internship and handling independent project through design and research thesis.

Present on the occasion were also the parents of the students admitted to the first batch of the institute. Dr Anup K. Singh, Director General, NU also shared his vision for the new Institute and assured that Nirma University is committed to make IA-NU a landmark in the field of Architectural education.

Nirma University features in the July 2014 issue of Higher Education Review for displays a great sense of pride with regard to the Research activities its students and faculty members have accomplished. Around 104 papers in international journals, 41 in national journals and 14 books in 2012 and 154 papers in international journals, 38 in national journals and 9 books in 2013 have been published. All of the institutes under the University encourage the students and faculty members to conduct research. They have conducted research for a variety of research organizations and have recevied funding from the state government and various other organizations. To further their research culture, the University has signed MoUs with ISRO, Physical Research Laboratories, Institute for Plasma Research and B.V. Patel Pharmaceutical Education & Research Development (PERD) Centre. While these organizations provide Nirma University with a host of projects, the research students and faculty members sometimes work on their own or with other researchers from these organizations to complete various projects.

OrCES has organized a technical event called “Cube Casting” on 10th and 11th April, 2014 during 4.15 p.m. to 6.15 p.m. Around 14 teams from UG and PG has participated in the event. Testing of cubes casted by the teams was carried out on 17th and 18th April, 2014, respectively.

It is a matter of accolade for us that the ROBOCON Team of Institute of Technology, Nirma University has won the Championship Trophy in the National level ROBOCON-2014 Competition held in Pune, organized by Doordarshan - MIT AOE.
There were a total of 89 teams in the ROBOCON 2014 competition.  Our Team has bagged this Tropy leaving all the Teams behind.  In the finals, our team won against Veermata Jijabhai Technological Institute, Mumbai. Institute of Technology has won this Championship Award for the 6th time so far.

ROBOCON is an international competition organized by Asia pacific Broadcasting union (ABU) , a collection of over 50 countries of Asia Pacific region.

The broadcasters of each participant country are responsible for conduct of their national contests to select the team which will represent their country in the International Contest. Teams from Engineering and Technological colleges are eligible for participation. Participating Teams are expected to design and fabricate their own robots and organize their teams including an Instructor, Team Leader, Manual Robot Operator and an Automatic Robot Operator.
