Agriculture is the most important occupation for most of the Indian families. In India, agriculture contributes about sixteen percent (16%) of total GDP and ten percent (10%) of total exports. Over 60 % of India’s land area is arable making it the second largest country in terms of total arable land. Agricultural products of significant economic value includes rice, wheat, potato, tomato, onion, mangoes, sugar-cane, beans, cotton, etc.

Economic Growth: Agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy. Though, with the growth of other  sectors, the overall share of agriculture on GDP of the country has decreased. Still, Agriculture  continues to play a dominant part in the overall economic scenario of India.

Conducting frequent and accurate soil tests helps in the long run because the information provided helps to protect and maintain our farms and other large investments. When combined with routine fertilizer applications, soil tests ensure peak performance for the short term and help maintain the land for the long term.

With as much as 60 percent of yield dependent on soil fertility, the best growing seasons are built from the ground up. Regardless of how much is spent on other crop inputs, if you haven’t taken care of the base —soil fertility — it’s difficult to maximize yield.

Final year students-Aditya Dave and his classmate  has developed FERMETESTER. It provide Hardware as a Service (HaaS) based model of frequent soil testing and its analysis based on the result. We provide reports to farmers based on frequent analysis so that they can prevent and stand against crop failures which in turn decreases suicide rates of farmers.

Under Minor Research Project, Department of Civil Engineering, IT-NU taken initiative to
lay down a stretch of pavement using Pervious Concrete at NU Campus was prepared by the
students of semester –III and M. Tech. CASAD (Civil) on August 24, 2017.
A pavement stretch of size 3.3 m × 10.6 m using Pervious concrete is constructed at Nirma
University campus by the department of Civil Engineering, Institute of Technology, Nirma
University. Pervious concrete uses the same materials as conventional concrete, with the
exceptions that the fine aggregate typically is eliminated entirely, and the size distribution
(grading) of the coarse aggregate is kept narrow, allowing for relatively little particle
packing.
The pervious nature of the pavement is proposed to act as a drainage pipe and is anticipated
to immediately drain away the accumulated water. By capturing the storm water and allowing
it to seep into the ground, the pervious concrete pavement is instrumental in recharging the
ground water and reducing the storm water runoff. Thus, the pervious concrete pavement is
likely to be a unique and effective means to address the important environmental issues and
support green, sustainable growth.
The step-by- step procedure of making the pavement stretch consists, 1) Development of mix
design of pervious concrete 2) Excavation of size 3.3 m × 10.6 m having depth of 600 mm
using Backhoe. 3) Laying of PCC of depth 100 mm having grade of concrete of M10. 4)
Laying of 40 mm coarse aggregate. 5) Installation of perforated pipes. 6) Laying of 20 mm
coarse aggregate. 7) Laying of pervious concrete of depth 150 mm.

A rural pavement stretch of size 2.5 m × 16 m using Alkali activated concrete paver blocks is constructed at Jaspur Village, Kalol, Gandhinagar by the department of Civil Engineering, Institute of Technology, Nirma University. The paver blocks are made using zero cement concrete (alkali activated concrete) and used for the construction of the rural pavement having low traffic volume.

The above work is one of the outcome of the research project titled “Application of Precast Products Made Using Bottom Ash And Fly Ash For Rural Pavements And Other Infrastructure In India”. The said project is a collaborative research project between University of Victoria, Canada & Nirma University, India and is approved by IC-IMPACTS (India-Canada Centre for Innovative Multidisciplinary Partnerships to Accelerate Community Transformation and Sustainability) Centres of Excellence.

The paver blocks used to make the pavement are of “Unipaver”/“Zigzag” shape & of thickness of 60 mm. The alkali activated concrete paver blocks have attained the compressive strength up to 40 MPa after the completion of ambient curing for the time duration of 28-days. The alkali activated concrete paver blocks contained a combination of fly ash and Bottom ash, Coarse aggregate limited to size of 10 mm, Sand, Sodium Hydroxide & Sodium Silicate. Fly ash & Bottom ash are the waste products of the thermal power plants. Sodium hydroxide & sodium silicate used for the paver blocks are of commercial grade. Therefore, it is anticipated that the alkali activated paver blocks are economical as compared to that of cement concrete paver blocks.

The step-by-step procedure of making the pavement stretch consists, 1) Preparation of around 1200 Nos. of alkali activated concrete paver blocks at concrete casting yard of civil engineering department, Nirma University. 2) Excavation of size 2.5 m × 16 m having depth of 200 mm using Backhoe. 3) Laying of PCC of depth 100 mm having grade of concrete of M10. 4) Laying of 12 inch Kerb stones around edges of the pavement. 5) Laying of 40 mm depth sand bedding. 6) Laying of paver blocks having depth of 60 mm in herringbone bond. 7) Joint sealing between paver blocks using compactor.

The session was held in PG Seminar hall from 9-11 am on 1st April, 2017. Seniors who were placed in various companies shared their experience about the interview and gave a lot of suggestions for preparing for the same.

Firstly, Dr. Jayesh Ruparelia, HOD Chemical Department, started the session by acknowledging the students that this is an important juncture, where students are to be properly guided. He also highlighted the fact that students should know where they want to go, that is, which is their particular field of interest. He also advised that students should try to learn as much as possible from their industrial exposure during training period.

Ruchir Surti and Ravi Singh, placed in Reliance Industried Limited, informed that there are basically two rounds for the interview, technical interview and HR interview. They suggested few books and websites for aptitude test preparation, RS Agrawal and IndiaBIX website, being the most popular ones. They were asked their favorite subjects during their interview so they told us to decide upon some subjects which we could tell to the interviewers.

Harshit Goyal, placed in Galaxy Surfactants, suggested that in case someone is preparing for further studies, they should refrain from telling so to the interviewer, and even if they do, they must assure that it would lie in the best interests of the company. Being at the highest post of any club does not matter to the interviewer, but it is how you drive your interview in the right direction. Project work and training experience are very important areas discussed in interviews. Questions like, where do you see yourself five years down the line, were asked to him in the HR interview. Also, never bluff in an interview, since it creates a bad impression. Almost 70% of the companies follow the no IF criteria, though some companies might not do so, it is essential to have proper information about the companies. For his company, there is an online test which you can give from home, followed by technical and HR interview. Change your favorite subject according to the company and you should know names of famous authors on the subject, also foreign authors. Resume is the most important thing as it is yourself on a paper, so present it well.

Topic: Opportunities and Technologies for Ethylene and Propylene production units in India
Timing & Venue: 2/3/2017, 1.00 – 2.30 pm, A-block conference room

Abstract

Opportunities and Technologies for Ethylene and Propylene production Units in India

Bipin Vora : Consultant, UOP/Honeywell Fellow-Retired Vibrant Gujarat-2017, Ahmedabad, India

India is now third largest economy, after China and USA and is also third largest in polymer and plastic consuming nations. Polymer and plastic consumption in India is growing at 10-12%, 1.5 times the GDP Growth rate of 7.4%. Ethylene at 145 million tons and propylene at 95 million tons annual world production are starting raw materials for production of polymers and plastics. While 20% of world population reside in India, production of these olefins in India account for only 3% of world production. India has significant gap in consumption versus production of ethylene and propylene derivatives. Our current import of these derivatives account for equivalent of about 4 million tons of ethylene and propylene combine and it is expected to grow to about 20 million tons by 2035. That is, at India can support one million ton capacity new light olefins plant every year for next two decade. This presentation out lines some of these growth trends and discusses technology options to meet this growing demand. Considering already existing strong base of petroleum refining and petrochemicals in Gujarat and flourishing ports, Gujarat is ideally situated to take lion share of this growth.
