ASHRAE (American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers) Western India Chapter organized technical quiz competition (Quizo 2019) at Ahmedabad. Nirma University team, under the mentor ship of Prof. B A Shah (SBA Nirma University ASHRAE Western India Student Branch). After beating 10 teams from leading engineering colleges across Gujarat they have won the first prize Rs. 20,000.

Students of Nirma University get chance to meet HVAC Expert and interact with students of other engineering colleges.

Mechanical Engineering Department, SoE, IT and Nirma University ASHRAE Western India Student Chapter jointly organized an expert lecture on "Cleanroom and HVAC System Design Fundamentals" by Mr. Wei Sun, ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, USA. ASHRAE student members of B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering and M.Tech. in Mechanical (Thermal Engineering) have attended the said lecture. Students learnt about cleanroom basics, clean room applications, cleanroom standards in USA and HVAC system design fundamentals from the Mr. Wei Sun expert lecture.

Prof. Darshit Upadhyay received ISTE National Award for best M.Tech Thesis in Mechanical Engineering in 2018 on 30th January 2019 at LD Engineering College, Ahmedabad for having guided the best M.Tech Thesis (1st Price) titled "Effect of steam and catalyst with lignite feedstock on the performance of downdraft gasifier" submitted by Krunal Rajesh Kumar Panchal. The department wishes him the best.

Congratulations to Prof. Balkrushna A. Shah of Mechanical Engineering Department and Student Branch Advisor (SBA) of ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) for receiving a prestigious International Award from ASHRAE.

Prof. Balkrushna A. Shah is awarded the 2018 Student Branch Advisor of the Year Award in recognition of his outstanding service and leadership in fostering the growth and strength of the Nirma University Student Branch. The award was presented to Prof. Balkrushna A. Shah by Mr Adam C. Davis (Manager, Student Activities, ASHRAE) during 2019 ASHRAE Winter conference held at Atlanta, Georgia, USA during January 12-16, 2019.

It is a matter of great pride for the Mechanical Engineering Department that two of the alumni Mr Gitanj Sheth and Mr Darshak Lodhiya scored 99.97 percentile in CAT exam. Department heartily congratulate both of them and wish them all the very best for their future endeavors.

Gitanj Sheth,alumnus of Mechanical engineering(B.Tech 2013-17) scored 99.97 percentile in CAT 2018 and secured 72nd rank in India and 1st  in Gujarat.

Prof Darshit S. Upadhyay, from Mechanical Engineering Department, presented a paper in "International Conference on Sustainable Energy and Environmental Challenges" organised by International Society for Energy, Environment and Sustainability (ISEES),  IIT Roorkee and NIT Uttarakhand during 18-21 December 2018 at IIT Roorkee. Prof. Rajesh N. Patel was co-author in this paper. The title of the paper was "Elemental and heat loss analysis of different feedstock in the downdraft gasifier." This paper was selected as the best paper award. Along with certificate and memento, 100 EUR book voucher (By springer)  was also provided by the organiser.

Students of 5th Semester, BTech visited Kadana Hydro Electric Power Plant on 11-10-2018 and 12-10-2018 from B and A division respectively. Students got acquainted with the scale of the hydro project with visualization of power plant structure and details of types and working of hydropower plant equipment including hydraulic turbine

A Visit to Hitachi World, Nr Pakwan Cross Road, S G Highway was arranged  for students on 28-09-2018 under ASHRAE chapter, Nirma University. Prof. B A Shah, Student Branch Advisor of Nirma University ASHRAE WIC accompanied the students. Mr Atul Parikh, GM - Projects, Aditi Air Conditioning Pvt. Ltd. explained construction and working of  various hitachi products related to residential and commercial air conditioning applications. UG and PG students of Mechanical Engineering department were exposed to various Hitachi Air Conditioning Products such as inverter ac, cassette ac, hide away ac, ductable ac, VRF system, Chiller, different types of duct, grille and diffuser for supply and return air etc.

AUTOCALYPSE, an automobile workshop for school students, is an extension activity organized by Mechanical Engineering Department every year since 2011. This is the 8th of its kind in continuation. From the last year, along with Autocalypse, a robotic workshop ROBOCALYPSE was also introduced for school students.

The event is coordinated and volunteered by Mechanical Engineering Students’ Association (MESA) in association with Nirma SAE Club (for Automobile) and Team Nirma Robocon (for Robotics).

The event is two days interactive workshop for the students of X, XI and XII grades. Every year hundreds of students from various schools of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar districts take part in it. This year the event was held on September 1 – 2, 2018, where total 206 students from 15 schools have participated.

The automobile workshops includes the expert talks related to automobile technology by eminent experts of the field, demonstration of various cut section models of automobile parts, demonstration of cut section of Omni car, Bike maintenance, demonstration of SAE BAJA ATV car prepared by students of SAE club, Automobile Quiz and other informal events.

Robotic workshop, conducted by Team Nirma Robocon, includes the expert talk, hands on practice of Robot building and programming. The participants are given a take away kit for Robot building per team.

The major attraction of the event was Idea Presentation competition wherein the participants have presented their innovative ideas regarding technological advancement with the best of their skills. The H B Kapadia School, Memnagar, Ahmedabad and Mount Carmel School, Gandhinagar won the 1st and 2nd prize respectively for their ideas.

Being an extension activity, no registration fee was charged from the participants. The to and fro transportation was provided to the participants. Food was also served to all the participants during the event.

The event is jointly funded by School of Engineering, Institute of Technology, Nirma University and Mechanical Engineering Students’ Association (MESA).

Prof B A Shah has been selected as the 2018 Student Branch Advisor of the Year!  Prof B A Shah is Student Branch Advisor of the Nirma University student branch of American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers(ASHARE), Western India Chapter. The award will be presented to him at the Winter Conference in Atlanta next January. Department wishes him the heartiest congratulations.

Industrial visit at Citizen Industries, Bhadaj was organised under Nirma University ASHRAE WIC in afternoon on 7/4/2018 for M.Tech Thermal Engineering students. During visit students got familiarity with manufacturing of air handling unit (AHU) used in clean room and central air conditioning plant.

Industrial visit to Ice Make Industry, Dantali, Ahmedabad was organised under Nirma University ASHRAE WIC in morning on 7/4/2018 for M.Tech Thermal Engineering students. During the visit, students got acquainted with manufacturing of cold room, ice cream freezer, chiller, BMC(Bulk Milk Cooler), Refrigerated Van etc. The company is providing refrigeration facilities for Ice Cream Industry, Dairy Product Industry, Food Processing Industry, Fruit & Vegetable Industry, Horticulture/Floriculture Industry, Hotel – Restaurant, Hospitality Industry, Plastic Industry, Pharmaceutical Industry, Biological Research, Chemical Processing Industry, Logistic industry.

Certificate for Charter of Nirma University Student Branch and authorised student branch of The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) sponsored by Western India Chapter (WIC) was handed over to Mrs Alka Mahajan, Director, IT, NU by Mr D N Shukla,Former President, ASHRAE WIC. 

 

Mr Aakash Patel, President, ASHRAE WIC;Mr Vijay Panchal, Secretary, ASHRAE WIC; Mr D M Shah, Senior ASHRAE Member, Dr V J Lakhera, HOD (Mech. Engg.); Dr R N Patel (Section Head, Thermal Engineering); Prof B A Shah (Student Branch Advisor (SBA), Nirma ASHRAE WIC) were present during the programme scheduled on 27/2/2018 (Tuesday). 

 

Mr Aakash Patel, President, ASHRAE WIC have briefly talked about ASHRAE activities like REFCON Conference; Industrial Visit to Johson Control Hitachi, GIFT City;Quizo-2018 and formerly announce ASHRAE Under Graduate Grant of amount $3350 received by Prof. B A Shah, SBA,  Nirma ASHRAE WIC for carrying out project title “Development of Split AC Test Rig Working on Inverter technology and charged with Environment Friendly Refrigerant R-32  – as a Laboratory Equipment for Engineering Students”.

 

Mr Aakash Patel, President, ASHRAE WIC administered the oath to the ASHRAE student members namely Tanuj Sailor as a president, Dinesh Sharma as a vice president, Mr Munigyana Patel as a secretary and Mr Vatsal Parmar as a treasurer of Nirma Univeristy student chapter ASHRAE WIC.
