Expert Lecture on "Role of modeling and simulation in optimal performance of chemical processes" by Dr. Nitin Padhiyar IIT Gandhinagar

The role of process modelling is very crucial in process systems engineering. The process model can be developed with two different approaches, namely (1) first principles model, and (2) data driven models. While the first approach is more popular in academics, second approach is more industrial relevance. The first principles models are obtained by fundamental laws and equations, such as mass, momentum, and energy balances along with thermodynamics laws. These models facilitate to simulate the processes especially with the help of computational techniques for better understanding the process. Further, the role of process model is incomplete if it is not applied for process optimization, control, or design purpose.

The topic of model and simulation will be covered with example of a simple chemical reactor. It will be followed by process optimization of a reactor with industrial relevance.

Analytical & Numerical Methods for well-known PDE’s

Most engineers and scientists studying physical phenomena are involved with two major tasks viz. Mathematical formulation of the physical process and Numerical analysis of the mathematical model. The mathematical formulation of a physical process requires background in related subjects (e.g. laws of physics) and most often certain mathematical tools. The formulation results in mathematical statements, often differential equations relating quantities of interest in the understanding and/or design of the physical process. Development of the mathematical model of a process is achieved through assumptions concerning how the process works. In the recent past many analytical and numerical methods have been emerged out to solve non-linear partial differential equations. Some recent analytical and numerical methods will be discussed to solve some well-known non-linear pde’s like Burger’s equation, Bousinessq equation, Richard’s equation. The importance of these equations in the real world problems will be introduced and some approximate analytical and numerical methods will be briefly covered in the lecture.
