Message from the Director’s desk

Dr. Sarat K. Dalai
Biology has reached its height and has become multidisciplinary in nature. The success of human genome sequencing with the emergence of systems biology has revolutionized the field of Biology and led to the rapid progress in understanding the biological phenomena at molecular level. Personalized medicine is soon going to be part of our life style in managing human health. The technologies developed during the last two decades not only help us give new dimension to scientific innovations, but also reduce the cost of molecular diagnosis for many diseases. more

Dean, Faculty of Science, Dr. Sarat K. Dalai, is a Professor (Biotechnology) with specialization in T cell immunology. Following his bachelor’s in Physics (1990) he did M.Sc. in Biotechnology from JNU [Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi] (1992) and subsequently got his Ph.D. from JNU in Immunology (1998). For his Ph.D. research he worked on protective immunity in Lymphatic filariasis, a major public health problem that affects over 30 million people in India. For his post Ph.D. research he went to USA, and worked on HSV latency and reactivation at National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), NIH. Upon moving the School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University he worked on antigen presentation and memory CD4+ T cell tolerance. Before invited to Nirma University in January 2011, he worked three years for US Military Malaria Vaccine Development Program at Walter Reed Army Research Institute where he developed his interest on memory CD8+ T cells. Currently his lab at Nirma Institute of Science focuses on generation and maintenance of T cells from the point of view of designing efficacious vaccine with particular focus on anti-malarial liver-stage immunity. During his long scientific career he has made seminal contribution to the field of Immunology and published many papers in scientific journals including Nature Immunology, Nature Medicine, Immunology and Cell Biology, Journal of Immunology, Journal of Virology, etc. He is a passionate scientist and loves to teach. Under his leadership since 2011 Institute of Science has positioned itself to pursue cutting Edge Research in Biological Science. Despite having small number of (eight) faculty members, the institute is running three M.Sc. programmes (Biotechnology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology) successfully with greater emphasis on research. In last 3 years the institute has got 12 externally funded research grants with revenue of ~3 crores INR from various funding agencies of Govt. of India and Govt. of Gujarat. Based on its record, the Institute of Science is a partner of DST, Govt. of Gujarat to advance Science.
