The student association of Institute of Science (INSSA) organized its first event of this semester on 18th December, 2015 which created great ripples in Institute. All the M.Sc. students and Ph.D. scholars enthusiastically participated in the card making event which was followed by an exhibition displaying the talents of students for a noble cause. This event provided Institute the opportunity to wear the crown of humanity and humbleness by donating money collected through exhibition to Hiramani old age home. The Director, Institute of Science, Prof. Sarat Dalai took the honour of handing over the collected funds to the representatives of Hiramani old age home. Each member of Institute was showered with the blessings from the elders of the old age home. Everyone's enthusiasm and zestful participation made the event a success.

The Second module of Faculty Development Programmes at Institute of Science was a Workshop on Systems Biology which was held on 16th December, 2015. The primary objective of the workshop was to provide a forum to educate faculty members with the latest developments in one of the fastest growing field of life science, systems biology. It was intended to keep faculty members abreast with the recent developments in systems biology and sharpen the edge in research as well as teaching-learning.

   The invited experts were Dr. Samrat Chatterjee, TSHTI, Faridabad; Dr. Shekhar Mande Director, NCCS, Pune and Dr. Ramray Bhat, IISc, Bangalore. The expert lectures covered the topics on - Connecting high throughput dynamical networks with small scale mathematical models to understand disease mechanism, Systems Biology: Insights into some Biological Problems and the systems biology of the (glyco) microenvironment.

The Faculty Development Programmes have been arranged at Institute of Science in three modules. The first module was a Workshop on Microscopy and Imaging Techniques by the Olympus and DSS Imagetech Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi for faculty members on 4-5, December 2015. This was academic initiative of the DSS Imagetech involving lectures and hands-on demonstration of motorized fluorescence microscope. The lectures by Mr. Brijesh Alva included Basics of Microscopy and contrast techniques, Optical Slicing techniques, F-techniques and TIRF Microscopy, Super-Resolution: Scanning vs Localization Techniques, Confocal and Deconvolution, Automated Multipoint imaging and Switching of Multipoint images, 3D rendering, and Co-localization. The second day sessions included demonstrations by Mr. Vishal Sahu on basics like Anatomy of the Microscope, optimizing settings, transmitted light and fluorescence, advanced image analysis, differential interference contrast etc. using standard slides. Some of the Ph.D. students also attended the hands-on session. The workshop provided excellent opportunity to refresh the basics and updating recent advances in the field of microscopy. The participants appreciated valuable learning with the help of the experts from DSS Imagetech and Olympus.

Dr. Purvi Kakadia 

Dept. of Molecular Medicine Pathology, University Of Auckland, New Zealand delivered a talk on 

"Discovery and Characterization of a Novel ABL1 Fusion; SHIP1/ABL1 in Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia"

It was an excellent overview of laboratory approaches to discovery of genes playing role in leukemia by meticulous and research oriented cancer diagnostic laboratory. The importance of scientific validation of laboratory findings was emphasized, students interacted for career guidance in addition to her presentation. It was a very useful and inspiring talk.

The Annual Cultural Festival of Institute of Science, RENAISSANCE- 2015 was held during 23rd - 24th September, 2015 under the auspices of Board for Student’s Welfare, Nirma University at the C auditorium. Shri Bhagyesh Jha, Chairman, Gujarat Sahitya Academy, Gandhinagar was the Chief Guest of the Inaugural function. Dr. Amee Nair, Coordinator and Dr. Nasreen Munshi, Co-Coordinator for Students Activities along with Prof. Sarat Dalai, other faculty members, non-teaching staff, and students were present at the inaugural ceremony held on 23 September, 2015. A total of 78 students from ISNU participated in Mime, Debate, Elocution, Collage, Spot Painting, Cartooning, Rangoli, Solo Dance, Group Dance, Folk Dance, Solo song, Duet Song, Group Song. In Debate participants presented the view for “The National River Linking project”. It was followed by Elocution competition on “India’s black money in tax havens-Need for new policies”. 

Dignitaries who were experts in their own fields, judged the various events. The Fine Arts events-Collage, Poster Making, Rangoli and on-the-spot painting were conducted within a week before the Annual Cultural programme. The winners of all events were given trophies. There was active participation by the students from Institute of Science in these events and won the appreciation of the judges.

The 11th foundation day of Institute of Science, Nirma University, Ahmedabad was celebrated on 4th September 2015.  Chief guest, Dr. Mukul Jain, Sr. Vice president and Head of Nonclinical Research & Development Center, Zydus Research Center, Ahmedabad delivered his talk entitled "Should Indian pharmaceutical industry change its generic mindset?" Dr. Manjunath Ghate, Director, Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma University presided over the function. Invited speaker Dr. Pratibha Amare, Head of Cancer Cytogenetics Department, TATA memorial Hospital, Mumbai, delivered a talk on "Cancer cytogenetics: Basic applications in diagnosis and disease management" in the post-lunch session. Dr. Sonal Bakshi coordinated the program of Foundation Day celebration. Eminent guests visited lab facilities and interacted with all the PhD students over posters presentations. They appreciated research activities and academics of Institute of Science.

Institute of science, Nirma University, had organized week long orientation programme for its fresh batch of students enrolled under the M.Sc. Biotechnology, Microbiology and Biochemistry programme. This new batch consists of 72 students from different states of the country.

Dr. Anup Singh, Director General, Nirma University, presided over the inaugural programme and also encouraged students with his warm welcome speech. Dr. Nasreen Munshi was coordinator of the programme. The chief guest for this occasion was Dr. Krishanu Ray, TIFR, Mumbai. Dr. Ray shared his journey right from choosing science as a career to acquiring a scientist position, with students. He also delivered a talk entitled “Nano-size motors and meter-long journeys”. This programme lasted for a week and students got a chance to interact with some of the eminent speakers from across the state like Dr. Anand Bhadalkar, Sector Specialist, GSBTM, Gandhinagar; Dr. Bhaswat Chakraborty, Cadila Pharmaceuticals; Dr. Mrugesh Shukla, M.G. Science Institute, Ahmedabad; Dr. Sonal Thakore, M.S. University, Vadodara and Mr. Alok Patel, Supratech Laboratory, Ahmedabad. All these lectures were a boost for students to start their new journey and reach new horizons.

The expert lecture delivered by Dr. Parth Shah, Supra-tech lab was on "Advanced Molecular Diagnostic Techniques" to update students with current techniques on Next Generation Sequencing and their usefulness in basic research. The technique is very vast and applicable in many areas of research. Research Scholars as well as faculty members found it to be very informative.

Dr. Mahaveer Sharma from Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Directorate of Soybean Research, delivered a talk on: "Application of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in Sustainable Plant Production Systems" on 13th March, 2015. The lecture was very inspiring as it had touched many avenues of microbiology. All students were very excited to know about this novel application of fungi in plant production systems.

Institute of Science, Nirma University, organized National Science Day Celebrations on February 28, 2015 with the rationale to spread the message about the significance of science in human society, to encourage the young students to pursue science and to popularize the science & technology. Prof. Sarat Dalai, Dean, Faculty of Science, Nirma University was the convener and Dr. Heena Dave was the coordinator of the programme. Dr. Asis Datta, Founder Director & Professor of Eminence, National Institute of Plant Genome Research and Former Vice Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi was the Chief Guest and he delivered a public lecture on Dream to bring Science to Society”. There were three hundred and fifty students including undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students and faculty members from various educational institutions. Distinguished and eminent scientists were invited for Panel discussion on Research Policy with the special emphasis on ‘Research in Education’. Dr. Bharat Chattoo, Professor of Molecular Genetics, Department of Microbiology, M.S. University, Vadodara was the moderator of the panel discussion. Dr. Datta, NIPGR, New Delhi, Dr. C.J. Shisoo, Hon. Director, B. V. Patel Pharmaceutical Education and Research Development (PERD) center, Ahmedabad and Dr. Anjana Desai, Professor, Department of Microbiology, M.S. University, Vadodara were the panelists. Numerous events for students like Rangoli competition, Essay writing, Poster presentation, Quiz contest, Model demonstration, Sci-toon competition were organized under the title of ‘SCIENZA-15’ Individual events were coordinated by the ISNU faculty members in association with faculty members of IPNU. One hundred and fifty two students participated in various activities. The programme was sponsored by The Gujarat Council of Science & Technology, DST, Government of Gujarat.

Institute of Science, Nirma University organized a guest lecture entitled "Preferential utilization of aromatic compounds over glucose by P.putida CSV86" by Prof. Prashant Phale from IIT Bombay. The talk delivered was very enlightening and it encouraged new avenues of research employing basic techniques. All students and faculty members seemed to be excited after knowing their research work and the overall experience was excellent.

Institute of Science conducted One Day Workshop “Grow your cells and harvest the chromosomes: Methods & Mechanisms of Human Cytogenetics” on 8th January, 2015 with the Centre for Continuous education, Nirma University.

Eleven participants including 8 students, 2 faculty members, and 1 laboratory personnel attended the workshop. Dr. Sonal Bakshi alongwith her Ph.D. students Fulesh Kunwar, Suhani Patel, Nazia Saiyed, and Research Fellow Shikha Tiwary conducted the lecture, orientation, and hands-on practical sessions. The workshop helped all participants to learn basic methods of human cytogenetics and all the partcipants were highly interactive during the session.
