Pharmacognosy


The Department of Pharmacognosy is responsible for providing knowledge and information on topics such as production of pharmaceutical raw materials from natural sources, traditional medicines and chemical analysis and phytochemical screening of medicinal plants, medicinal plant biotechnology and phytotherapy etc. The department regularly organizes national seminars and workshops with the support of Government funding agencies like AICTE, ICMR & GUJCOST etc.
The Department also collaborates research projects with leading herbal, cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies like Green Chem, Bangalore, Beiersdorf (NIVEA), Ahmedabad, Mikasa Cosmetics, Ahmedabad, Brillare Science Pvt. Ltd, Ahmedabad, Troikaa Pharma, Ahmedabad, K. Patel Phyto Extract Pvt. Ltd, Bhilad Ayurlab Herbals Pvt. Ltd, Vadodara and Divine Skin Care, Gandhinagar etc. The department has received Research Projects from DBT & GUJCOST.  Department has done consultancy project for many herbal and nutraceuticals companies.

Infrastructure

The Pharmacognosy Laboratory is well equipped with high-resolution microscopes like Projecting microscope and digital microscope. Such microscopes help to raise quality of understanding histological studies of plant. General characterization laboratory offers complete sample preparation, analysis, writing and consultation on different tools such as:

The department is also supported by an excellent medicinal plants garden having a wide variety of plants extending the scope to carry out research on medicinal plants.

Curriculum

The principal education philosophy of the department has been to provide a sound professional training, which has been consistent with the current scientific and technological background supported by practice through laboratory application in Pharmacognosy. The department deals with the theoretical as well as practical knowledge of the following modules of courses that a student needs to acquire.

M. Sc. in Cosmetic Technology
Institute of Pharmacy and Institute of Science, Nirma University have launched first interdisciplinary M.Sc. programme with specialization in Cosmetic Technology, focusing highly on human resource training and employability in cosmetic and personal care industries in India and abroad. This programme offers innovative curriculum to cater the skill development in this specific area. Both the Institutes have state of art of laboratories with all ultra-modern facilities and equipment.  
This  two year Programme is specially offered for  candidates having Bachelor’s degree under 10+2+3/4/5, pattern of education in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Life Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Bio-technology, Agricultural, Veterinary, Fishery & Dairy Sciences, Pharmacy, Medicine (MBBS), BDS, Bioinformatics, Genetics, Medical Laboratory Technology, BHMS, BAMS, B.Tech./B.E. Biotechnology, Physiotherapy and Bio-medical Engineering.

  • Most of the faculty members involved in programme are Ph. D. with more than 10 years of teaching and research experience.
  • Highly focused syllabus designed with help and support of global cosmetic companies with special emphasis on current need and future aspects of cosmetic industry.
  • First specialized course in Gujarat to cater to the need of cosmetic and FMCG industry despite of its high presence.
  • Collaborations in terms of training and research are with International brands like NIVEA (M/s Beiersdorf, Germany), as well as many domestic cosmetic companies like Brillare Science Pvt. Ltd., Zydus Wellness, Daxal Cosmetics, Lamos , Devine Skin Care, Vasu Herbals, Ban Labs and many more have already given their consent for support in manpower training and recruitments, specific to this programme. All leading cosmetic companies have shared their opinion for designing syllabus and course scheme.

 Research Activities

The department is providing consultancy regarding phytopharmacological evaluation of herbal drugs and  their combinations and development of new formulations like anti oxidant effervescent granules, herbal shampoos and other herbal cosmetics to companies like Green Chem, Banglore, Ayurlab Herbals, Vadodara, Troikaa Pharma, Ahmedabad,   K. Patel Phyto Extractions Pvt. Ltd, Valsad, Divine Skin Care, Gandhinagar and Advance Research Laboratory, USA etc. The department is also involved in research projects funded by Govt. agencies like DBT and GUJCOST etc.  The faculty and the students at the department participate in research to design physical parameter for organized and unorganized drugs, their standardization using different techniques like HPTLC, UV, IR, AAS, Mass, SFE (Super critical fluid extraction) etc.
The department of Pharmacognosy has received major research project grant from Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi (DBT) and have also received two minor research projects from GUJCOST, Gandhinagar. Faculty has filed provisional Indian patent. Several students are pursuing their Ph. D. under the guidance of the able faculties in the department. Student are receiving research fellowships from INSPIRE-DST. The faculty members are also engaged in publication of research paper in high impact factor journals.
