Executive Diploma Award Ceremony 2016

The Executive Diploma Award Ceremony of Seventeenth Batch (EDP 2015-16) was held on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Institute of Management, Nirma University. Mr. Sanjay Kumar, Vice President HR at HITACHI Ltd. was the chief guest on the occasion. Dignitaries attended the annual ceremony function were    Dr. M. Mallikarjun, Director, Institute of Management, Nirma University, Dr. Deepak  Shrivastava  and Dr. Chetan Jhaveri  Chairperson, Executive Diploma Programme in Management. Total 25 participants were awarded Executive Diploma with specialization in Operations Management.

The Institute of Management had started the Executive Diploma Programmes (EDP) in year 1999 to fulfil the needs of the working executives, managers and entrepreneurs.  The Programme focuses on updating the participants on latest developments in the areas of management, and preparing them to take higher responsibilities in their organizations. The Executive Diploma Programmes are offered in area of Finance, Marketing, International Business and Operations Management specializations.

Management Conclave : Utkrishta-2016

Utkrishta, The management conclave organized by Institute of Management, Nirma university was conducted on 9 and 10 September,2016 at IMNU premises. The conclave had 4 sessions extending over the entire span of two days, with each session specifically dedicated to Finance, Operations, Marketing and HR domains. The topic for Conclave was “Emerging Practices in Management”.
The second session for conclave was conducted by Optimus, The Operations Club of IMNU. The session was graced by presence of 3 eminent speakers.  Mr. Samir J. Shah currently owner of JBS Group of Companies shared his views on “International Logistics – Introduction & Future”.

Then the session was taken over by Mr. Siddhartha Nangia who shared his insights on “Customer service to customer delight – Opportunities and Challenges”. Mr Nangia is cofounder of Smytten with over more than 15 years of experience in Operations & Supply Chain. These two sessions were headed by Dr. Rajesh Jain, Professor Nirma University as Session Chairperson.

For the third and the last optimus conclave session we were privileged to have with us our Alumni, Mr. Bhavin Pandya currently General Manager at Atlas Copco (India) Ltd. He shared his valuable thoughts on “Operations: The step you can’t afford to skip”. Mr Pandya was a gold medallist for “Best Student”  and was also conferred with “Bronze Medal” for “Overall Scholastic Performance”. The session Chairperson for this session was Dr. Mahesh K.C, Professor Nirma University.

Inaugural of Executive Diploma Programmes of Institute of Management was held on 17th, July 2016 in Institute of Management, Nirma University. The Chief Guest at the inaugural event was Mr. Mahendiran Selvaraj Value Stream Coach, Ingersoll Rand (India) Limited. Dignitaries attended inaugural function were Dr. S. Garimella, Director, Institute of Management, Nirma University and   Dr. Chetan Jhaveri  Chairperson, Executive Diploma Programme in Management. In his address to the EDP participants, the chief guest, Mr Selvaraj told the paricipants about the necessity of operational excellence in the organization. Mr Selvaraj, speaking on the occasion talked about “A3 Thinking” for problem solving. Total 50 participants have enrolled for EDP programmes of IMNU which is designed to fulfil the needs of the working executives, managers and entrepreneurs. This year, the Programmes are offered in area of Marketing Management and Operations Management specializations.

A bright Monday[June 20, 2016] morning saw the beginning of sessions for batch of MBA-FT 2016-18. The junior batch of MBA-FT at Institute of Management, Nirma University was energy-packed and an excited. The corridors were filled with excited students, and their proud, yet anxious parents.

The initial registration procedure was followed by executive lunch for the students and their family members.

A formal inaugural function was organized post lunch which was graced by Mr. Rajiv Sharma, CEO of Sterling Addlife India Limited that owns and manages group of healthcare services companies, including largest chain of corporate hospitals in Gujarat under the brand name of Sterling Hospitals.

Mr. Sharma delivered an interesting address to the new joinees, reminiscing his days as a student at IIM, Ahmedabad. He gave some interesting tips and much needed advice. He stressed on the importance of courses like Organizational Behaviour and Business Ethics that may be taken lightly, but are actually extremely important. He also advised students to decide on their goal, whether generalization or specialization and to work relentlessly toward the same.

The day ended with a one-on-one interaction of faculty, staff and students.

“Business provides a path for creating innovation and improving lives”, said Chief Guest, John Anderson Fry, President, Drexel University, Philadelphia

• 500 students conferred degree at the convocation
• 18 scholastic medals were given to students for securing highest rank in their respective programmes

Nirma University, Ahmedabad, today organized its 21st Annual Convocation at its campus on SG Highway, Ahmedabad, wherein 500 students were conferred upon various degrees. President John A. Fry, Drexel University, Philadelphia was present at the convocation as the Chief Guest, whereas the function was presided over by Dr. Karsanbhai K Patel, President, Nirma University.

13 students from Ph.D., 227 students from MBA – Full Time, 55 students from MBA – Family Business & Entrepreneurship, 2 students from MBA – Part Time, 2 students from LL.M., 94 students from B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) and 107 students from B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) were awarded degree for successful completion of their academic courses. Several awards were also given to deserving students as a token of appreciation of their hard work while achieving their goal. Total 18 scholastic medals were given to students for securing highest rank in their respective programmes. Delivering the convocation address, Chief Guest, John Anderson Fry, President, Drexel University, Philadelphia said, “Business is one way in which humanity organizes itself to harness everyone’s talents and ideas. It provides a path to creating innovation, improving lives and expanding our impact far beyond the individual”. Speaking more on developing entrepreneurship and innovation skills among students, John A. Fry further said “India ranks seventh in the world for innovation among its entrepreneurs. More than half describe themselves as having innovative products or services. As that spirit is backed by more confident and widespread entrepreneurship, you can see the potential for a real boost to worldwide innovation. India ranks among the best nations for entrepreneurial finance and supportive government policies. And, bringing us full circle to the academic celebration we’re sharing today, India is ranked 10th for entrepreneurship education at the primary and secondary school levels and 14th at higher levels”.

The convocation began with welcome address by Dr. Patel, President of the university, who also conferred degrees to the pass-outs. The Chief Guest, President John A. Fry presented Scholastic Awards to the toppers of various disciplines before delivering the convocation address. The function ended with concluding address by the Director General of the University.


Dr. Patel highlighted that, Nirma University has set up new benchmark in the way the education system works and it has educated the students in a way so that they can take up the challenges of the new age and grow up to their potential.

Institute of Management, Nirma University, Ahmedabad under the aegis of its Doctoral Programme in Management organizes Doctoral Research Conference in Management every year. This year conference had 4 workshops, 12 track sessions with 49 presentations and 6 research clinics, over the two days conference. Conference witnessed 91 abstracts, After the blind review
of full papers received, 41 papers were accepted for publication.

Dr. Arvind Sahay, Professor, IIM Ahemdabad delivered the inaugural address. He talked about some latest trends in consumer behavior, one of them being neuroscience. The track sessions and research clinics were in the area of Economics & Finance, Marketing Management, Human Resource Management & Organisational Behaviour, Operations Management and General
Management. For research clinic six experts were invited. Dr. A.C. Brambhatt and Dr Vivek Suneja for Marketing area, Dr. R. J. Mody and Dr. Tara Nair for Finance & Economics area, Dr. D. M. Pestonjee and Dr. Dutta Roy for Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management area.

Apart from track sessions and research clinics, as a part of conference, four expert sessions were organized. Dr. Dutta Roy, Asst. Professor, Indian Statistical Institute – Kolkata delivered expert lecture on ‘Designing Questionnaire for Doctoral Research in Management.’ He discussed at length some pertinent issues related to questionnaire design. Dr. M. Mallikarjun Professor, Institute of Management, Nirma University, Ahmedabad, imparted useful insights on ‘Preparation of Research Proposal’. The session was quite useful for the naïve researchers. Dr. A. C. Brambhatt, Research Mentor, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Gandhinagar,delivered expert lecture on ‘Defending Research Proposal’. The session saw some interesting deliberations on points to be considered while defending research proposal. Dr. Vivek Suneja Professor, Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University, delivered a very interesting session on ‘The Philosophy of Research’.

Delegates from across the country participated in the conference. The conference had participants from Mehsana, Udaipur, Gandhinagar, Aligarh, Jamshedpur, Pune, Bhopal, Rajkot, Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore, Ajmer, Bhilai and Delhi. The two days conference concluded with valedictory session, whereby best paper prizes were declared. First Prize was awarded to Punita Dhansingh Rajpurohit for the paper titled ‘Prediction of Industrial Sickness: A Study of BIFR Companies’. Second Prize was awarded to Dhyani Mehta for the paper titled ‘Behaviour of Indian Saving and Investment: An Empirical Investigation of Keynesian and Classical Debate’. Third Prize was awarded to Yamini Chandra for the paper titled ‘Perception of Entrepreneurial Orientation, Aspiration and its Impact on Emotional Wellbeing: Challenges for the Future Entrepreneurs’.

A serial entrepreneur who has launched four start-ups with an aggregate capital of 16 million, Mr. Krishnan Ganesh is the epitome of humility in success. Along with his entrepreneur wife Meena Ganesh, K. Ganesh graced the students of IMNU with an inspiring address. Mr. Ganesh shared with us success stories of Big Basket, Tutor Vista, Portea Medical, Blue Stone among other dot-com start-ups explaining his simple yet effective success mantra:

1. Choose a thriving industry 
2. Identify a pain point and work on eradicating it
3. Market it extensively 

Mr. Ganesh discussed about how effective marketing strategies can be the difference between success and failure for a small business. He made the students understand how if you try to market your start-up to everyone, you might end up wasting both time and money. The key is to identify a target market and go after market share aggressively. The factors based on which you choose your target market can be the market size, purchasing capacity, competition and your product’s value proposition. Yet another fact that cannot be disputed is that the most successful start-up marketing strategies are those that embed marketing into their product. Building virality into a product can ensure that the product markets itself. India's thriving population and large middle class is the perfect setup for successful start-ups. He busted an important myth about start-ups being fun and glamorous saying they are 1% fun and 99% hard work! 

Mr. Ganesh concluded by saying that mobile connectivity has helped boom this business to an even larger size. Social media being the norm of the day, it can play a crucial role in helping to spread word about your business. It is one of the most popular ways to promote your content and reach influencers. Since a great content promotion plan brings potential customers to your website and influencing the influencer can generate thousands of new leads, social media is invaluable to start-ups. In doing so, it is imperative to choose the right social media platforms.

Mrs. Meena Ganesh then talked about her success story and how to strike the perfect work-life balance. Addressing the young women in the audience she said that they are not superwomen. In India, it is mainly a women’s duty to look after the children and other members of the family. Man plays a secondary role only. In case of married women, she has to strike a fine balance between her business and family. Her total involvement in family leaves little or no energy and time to devote for business. Support and approval of the family seem to be a necessary condition for women’s entry into business. Accordingly, the educational level and family background of husbands or fathers positively influence women’s entry into business activities. Mrs. Ganesh explained that the expectations burdened on women of managing their family and social life were unfair; to be successful there is no shame in asking for help from family members. Although compartmentalizing things would be impossible, we could at least start with prioritising goals and staying focused. She emphasised on how the time is nigh for women to come out of their age-old defined roles and start following their dreams.

The inspiring duo ended with a video of their success at TutorVista that sold to Pearson at 100% stake and how it has changed how children learn worldwide.

The 19th Nirma International Conference on Management (NICOM) was organized by Institute of Management, Nirma University during January 7th to 9th, 2016. Its central theme was “Empowering Trade, Industry and Society in Challenging and Competitive Environment” which had nine sub-themes namely ‘Make in India, Digital India, Clean India (Swachh Bharat), Smart India (Smart Cities), Skill India, Green India, Ease of Doing Business, Start up India and Interdisciplinary Issues. In total, 245 abstracts and 180 full papers were received. The papers were received from India and abroad, mainly from the countries like Japan, Uganda, USA, Fiji, Bangladesh, and South Africa. The papers were sent for two rounds of blind review and thereafter, based on the feedback, selected papers were published in three books as Conference Proceedings with ISBN number by Excel India Publications, New Delhi. The Conference had total registrations of 100 delegates. In addition to this, 32 faculty members and 36 students were also registered to present papers in NICOM 2016. We also had a delegate from USA visiting the conference and 9 foreign students who registered to attend the conference only.  In total 143 papers were presented by the participants in 27 track sessions organised over the period of three days. In addition to the inauguration and valedictory sessions, there were three plenary sessions delivered by reputed national and international speakers.


The conference was inaugurated on January 7th, 2016. The inaugural session was addressed by the Guest of Honour, Mr. Ramakant Jha, CEO, Smart Cities, IL&FS & Ex. Chairman – GIFT, Gandhinagar, who shared his thoughts on how the aspirations of society grow with corresponding growth in various fields. He discussed on the coming up of smart cities and the thrust that it would provide in the overall development of the nation. The Chief Guest of the inaugural session, Prof. (Dr.) Ram Shankar Katharia, Hon’ble Minister of State for Human Resources Development, Government of India, then addressed the audience thanking for the invitation and a chance to share his wisdom to the budding managers. He spoke on the current state of education in India and emphasised the need of quality in the education system. He appreciated Gujarat’s commendable development in the last decade and extended the accreditation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The inaugural function was also graced by Padma shri Dr. Karsanbhai K. Patel, President, Nirma University.

 The Kaizen Committee of Institute of Management, Nirma University organized Pratidhwani – The Alumni Conclave celebrating the contributions of its alumni in various fields across industries. The theme - “Change is the only Constant”. The Alumni Conclave is an endeavor by IMNU to bring together its alumni on a common platform to share their experiences with current students.

Pratidhwani this year initiated a new format of a panel discussion and was divided into four panel sessions consisting of a Marketing panel, Finance panel, Human resource panel and Entrepreneurship panel. The conclave was inaugurated by the marketing panel consisting of some of the most respected alumni of Institute of Management, Nirma University, namely, Ms. Meenu Bagla, VP Marketing, Quinnox Inc. from the 1998-2000 batch, Mr. Shobhit Bahel, Marketing Manager, Petronas from the 2001-2003 batch and Mr. Mainak Banerjee, Branch Manager, Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance from the 2004-2006 batch. They talked about the 4 principles of marketing, namely, Market, Message, Media and Measurement. They highlighted the importance of understanding the target market’s nuances and addressing them not just in terms of demand but in terms of buying behaviour.
