Globalization has changed the dynamics of the entire polity and society. The globalization of legal standards and practices is beginning to be reflected in legal education. Since the development of knowledge economy, the establishment of educational institutions of global excellence along with changed new curriculum of global standard ought to become the priority of the developing countries like India.

The Institute of Law, Nirma University in order to make its students appraise the new international legal reality recently conducted three Certificate Courses- Certificate Course on “Business in Germany: Regulatory and Legal Framework” by Prof.  Dietmar Boernar, HoF University Germany (6-10th November2017), Certificate Course on “Changing Dynamics of Constitutionalism in China” By Prof.  Jason Buhi, Peking University China (10th- 17th November, 2017) and a Certificate Course on “Emerging Trends in Global Constitutionalism' by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Mohan Peiris, Former Chief Justice Sri Lanka (13-17th November, 2017).

The objectives of the courses was to present an overview of the regulatory and legal business framework, contemporary developments in the field of constitutional law inclusive of constitutionalism, to expound the understanding of the emerging issues, to bring out the philosophical and historical rooting’s of its fundamental features, to embark on a comparative analysis, and consider the effectiveness of the rule of law in contemporary times. The courses would develop greater insights and would help the students explore the reality of legal globalization and suggest ways in which the emerging multinational and multicultural legal order could be made more just and effective.

Madhava Menon, renowned academician & revolutionary of modern legal education, Hon’ble. Justice Mohan Pieris, former Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, Dr. Anup K Singh, Director General Nirma University, and Shri K.K. Patel, Vice President Nirma University.

The team of Sourabh Pancholi, Divyang Bhatia & Ojaswi Sharma were winners of 7th Amity International Law Moot Court Competition (Paperless edition). The team also bagged the best memorial award and was praised overall for their presentation, mannerism and arguments. ILNU congratulates them.

A workshop was organised on "IPR concerns for patenting Pharmaceutical Products" for the 9th semester IPR Honors Group students on 8th September 2017, where Dr. Kaushik Banerjee, Intellectual Property Management, Zydus Research Centre, Cadila Healthcare Ltd shared his experience and expertise on the various contemporary issues of intellectual property regime for pharmaceutical industry. He also discussed about the case studies where he had pioneered to take the patent of the said pharmaceutical product.

Legal Aid Committee, Institute of Law, Nirma University organised a legal awareness camp at Village Lilapur on 2nd September 2017 Saturday where ILNU students talked about Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to the Lilapur school students. Alongwith this, distribution of biscuits to the children. The legal awareness camp further went to the Lilapur's parent institute Environmental Sanitation Institute - (ESI), Sughadh, where 50 Anganwadi teachers were addressed. The members of the Legal Aid Committee performed a skit on "Protection against Domestic Violence" and explained the importance of the said law. The ESI personnel Mr. Devendrabhai explained the ESI activities and explained the importance of sanitation. The skit was well received by the Anganwadi teachers. 30 students participated in this legal awareness camp. At this juncture, the legal aid committee also remembered the founder chairperson Late Dr. K.P.Maliksir who used to motivat the students for empowering weaker sections of society through compassion!

The Institute organized a panel discussion for discussing the fundamental shift in our legal regime as the Supreme Court of India gave an unanimous verdict in the case of Justice K S Puttaswamy and Anr. v. Union of India (Writ Petition (Civil) No. 494 of 2012) declaring Right to Privacy as a Fundamental Right.

Tanay Tiwari, Swarna Hardikar and Ankit tripathi, closely studied and discussed key legal issues involved in the matter , essential elements of privacy, Test of Privacy, its evolution and the constitutional protection, critical analysis of the judgement and its implication on Section 377, UID scheme, Adhaar, and innumerable aspects of our socio-legal life.

The Institute celebrated its  10th Foundation Day on 19th August 2017 at the Institute of Law.  Shri Kamal Trivedi Advocate General, State of Gujarat was the Chief Guest of the Programme. Dr. Anup K. Singh, The Director General and Shri D. P. Chhaya, Director (Academic and General Administration), Nirma University graced the occasion.  During the inaugural programme, the students were felicitated for their achievements in the co-curricular and extra curricular activities during the year 2016-17.  Various activities such as photography competition, cricket, quiz competition, mono act were conducted as part of the foundation day celebration

ILNU hosted Patriotic Song Competition in association with Rotaract Club of Nirma Institutes (RCNI) on 11th August 2017, Friday. Theme of this competition is 'Deshraag'.  Faaculty/Staff members and Students participated from all institutes under Nirma University. Winners and Runner-Ups were awarded Trophy and Certificate in both categories.

Nirma University celebrated the 70th Independence Day with great fervour and patriotism. The chief guest during the occasion was Prof. (Dr) Anil Kumar Gupta, IIM, Ahmedabad. In his address after unfurling the national flag at the university, he expressed happiness on the progress of the nation and motivated the people to strive for innovation and invention. He quoted various engaging success stories of the country and stressed that one should endeavour to better oneself.

The flag hoisting ceremony was also attended by Dr Anup K. Singh, Director General; Shri D. P. Chhaya, Director (A&GA); Mr. G. Ramchandran Nair, Executive Registrar; Heads of the constituent Institutes of the University; faculty and staff members and the students in large numbers.

ILNU hosted its Annual Conclave Series - SERMON'17 on 4th & 5th August and 11th & 12th August, 2017. This conclave has aimed to make the students aware of the policies, change in the way of practice and complexity of legal issues as well as to discuss different career options in the legal field.

The Institute thrives to make societal impacts and so does its students. The first step in this direction was to adopt a village - Jamiyatpura in the last academic session and this time, the NSS (National Service Scheme)-ILNU planned its first activity in the same village. NSS ILNU organized the "Swachchhata Pakhwara" at Jamiyatpura where the students of ILNU helmed the responsibility of cleaning the village. During the process the students painted dirty walls and wrote slogans over them; sensitized and convinced the villagers on the need for cleanliness with door to door awareness; thoroughly cleaned the Primary School and Gram Panchayat and discussed with Village Council on caste geopolitics and how NSS can help. The activity was taken up in lieu to make the villagers understand about the hazards of open defecation and making cleanliness the top most priority in the village.

The Institute was conferred with this award in the category of best legal education in the country.  The award was received in the Symposium (Thought of Leadership-Champions change) by Herald Global and organized by ERTC Media on July 19, 2017 at Hotel Sahara One in Mumbai.

ILNU organized a four-day Orientation Programme for the New Batch (2017) of the Five Year Integrated B.A. LL.B (Hons) and B.Com LL.B. (Hons) from July 10 to 13, 2017.  The Director & Dean, Prof. (Dr.) Purvi Pokhariyal welcomed all the students and parents.  The Chief Guest of the inaugural ceremony of the Orientation Programme on 10th July 2017 was Ms. Meenakshi Lekhi, Member of Parliament and Advocate-Supreme Court of India and delivered the key note speech.

She oriented the students regarding law as one of the most promising career option.  There are no short cuts for success and one needs to constantly pursue and focus on the goal relentlessly. She stressed on the importance of Core values, Social set up and the Skill set as a must for successful career. She also talked about Composite leadership and reminded the students that learning curve is a never ending one. Ms. Lekhi talked about the virtue of courage and asked students to develop compassion bearing in mind the end product. She encouraged the students to take failures in stride and keep working hard irrespective of how adverse the circumstances are. She also emphasized on the importance of persuasiveness, and emotional intelligence in any chosen endeavor.

Shri D.P. Chhaya, Director (Academic & General Administration), Nirma University was the Guest of Honour at the Inaugural ceremony and shared his views and expectation of the University from the students and parent.  Shri K K Patel, Vice President, Nirma University presided over the function. Mr Arun Prasad, Assistant Professor, Institute of Law delivered the vote of thanks.

Nirma University witnessed 23rd Convocation on its main campus lawn on Thursday, April 20, 2017. A total of 107 students of BA LLB (Hons), 65 students of B.Com LLB (Hons) and 46 students of BBA LL.B (Hons) graduated while proud parents, friends and relatives watched from the sea of audience members who turned out for the event.

The Convocation was declared open by Dr. Karsanbhai K Patel, President- Nirma University. Dr. Patel delivered the welcome address and introduced the Chief Guest- Prof Ved Prakash, Former Chairman- University Grants Commission.

Prof. Ved Prakash awarded the medals to the meritorious students in various streams. In his Convocation address he discussed that higher education demands focus on the four E’s- Expansion, Equity, Excellence and Employability. He stressed on the need for enhancing Gross Enrollment Ratio, better infrastructure, better state institutions and enriching teaching capacities. He stressed on the need for universities with better industry linkages and mobilizing vocational and main stream education. Prof Ved Prakash conveyed his best wishes to the Graduating students, and their parents and urged students to appreciate the power of perseverance and never every give up something they find to be tough. He insisted every students, whether they go for higher education or entering the industry, must develop his own library at home. “One should never ever forget the alma matter and must contribute in whatever way possible. One must also develop a character that is known to of impeccable integrity” he added. He also asked students to work hard to meet the challenges world is facing and ensure an enlightening future.

Dr. Anup K Singh, Director General- Nirma University shared the progress report of the University and congratulated the graduating students.

Institute of Law, Nirma University organized an Open House Session on Career in Law on 17th April, 2017. The session was organized to orient the parents and students regarding most growing and lucrative career options available in the field of law. Dr. Tarkesh Molia, Associate Professor, Institute of Law, addressed the audience about the focus of the institute of law on quality and employability in its endeavor to prepare effective and socially responsible individuals and organisations. The curriculum offered at the Institute of Law, Nirma University is justice based, novel, innovative and designed to keep students equipped with latest developments. In order to bridge the gap between theory and practice, the institution also conducts enrichment programs and professional training program parallely which ensures multi-disciplinary approach to law. A lawyer today is a policy planner, business advisor, mediator, negotiator, lobbyist an effective communicator and a reformer

The Guest Speaker of the session-Mr Mohit Mangal, MD and CEO, iQue ideas, oriented the students regarding law as one of the most promising career option. In litigant societies like the US and other western countries, legal career is one of the most sought after careers and only the brightest minds get admission in the top law schools. This trend is fast catching up in India too and law career options are opening up fast. He discussed, that traditionally, students could specialize in either civil or criminal laws, however the number of options available to law graduates today are manifold. Not just limited to conventional litigation and Judicial services, a Law degree opens up career options in corporate management, Corporate consultancy, Law Firms, NGO’s and administrative services too.  Also catching up is Legal Processing outsourcing where there is a delegation of core legal functions like making first drafts of cases, compliance work, legal research, etc. to an external counsel.  . He also emphasized on the importance of good analytical ability, logical reasoning, persuasiveness, and emotional intelligence and conflict management and negotiation skills in legal profession.

Mr Arun Prasad, Assistant Professor, Institute of Law oriented the students regarding teaching-learning process, Student Mentoring and Progression and the admission procedure at the institute.

Centre for ADR, Institute of Law, Nirma University organized a two days Mediation Training Workshop for the students of VIIIth Semester students in two phases as a part of ADR Clinical Paper during 17-18 February, 2017 in first phase. 2nd phase will be organized during 3-4 March, 2017. Master Trainer for the workshop Mr. Niranjan Bhatt, Senior Advocate & Master Trainer of Supreme Court Committee on Mediation & Managing Trustee, AMLEAD conducted this Workshop along with Ms. Veena Ralli (Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Additional Organising Secretary, Delhi High Court Mediation Centre). The emphasis of the Workshop was on practical exercises by way of role play, simulation exercises wherein students took up practical problem and acted as Mediator, clients and advocates to resolve disputes related to various areas. 

This event was co-ordinated by Dr. Rohit Moonka, Course Co-ordinator, ADR along with Co-faculty Ms. Nikita Karodia.

He also discussed and shared his vast experience in the procedural field related to law and compared the Constitutions of Both the neighbouring countries, discussing the similarity & Dissimilarity between each other.

2. The team consisting of Binayak Subudhi, Shantanu Gupta, Mohit Agarwal and Dhairyaditya Rathore won the Team event of 4x100m Relay with the time of 52:72seconds] The team defeated the defending champion GNLU by .19micro-seconds]

The Centre for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law, Institute of Law, Nirma University, Ahmedabad (Gujarat) is organising the sixth edition of its annual flagship event - National Students conference on “International Humanitarian and Refugee Laws” in association with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on 16th March, 2017. The conference is aimed to address contemporary issues and challenges faced the scholars, academicians and practitioners in the field of International Humanitarian and Refugee Laws. The conference would showcase a platform for interaction of minds from eminent personalities, students, organizations and every stakeholder having interest in the field.

It is a matter of immense pride for us that the 7th Institute of Law Nirma University National Moot Court Competition, 2017 was conducted in association with the Chambers of Mr. K.T.S. Tulsi, Sr. Advocate, Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.

This prestigious moot court competition was a benchmark in India’s mooting circuit and was highly known for its impeccable judging by experienced legal stalwarts. This year, the ILNU moot presented a challenging proposition based on critical areas of Criminal Law and other allied issues.

The moot court competition was held from February 10th, 2017 to February 12th, 2017 at Institute of Law, Nirma University, S.G. Highway, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Students from all over India has participated in the competition.

Distinguished lecture of Dr. Ilias Trispiotis School of Law University of Leeds, U.K. was delivered on 8th February, 2017 at 11.00 a.m. on the topic “Religious Pluralism in the European Public Sphere: Fraternity, Civility and the Wearing of Religious Symbols in Public in Auditorium, Institute of Management, Nirma University Campus, Ahmedabad. A faculty interaction is also scheduled with Dr. Ilias on 8th February, 2017 at in Conference Room, IL.

The Director and the Academic Coordinator, along with the Faculty Conveners of the respective semesters interacted with the parents/guardians.

A Three Days Workshop on 'Patent Litigation' was organised as a part of the paper of 'IP Litigation" for the IPR Honours of Xth Semester during 26-28 January, 2017. The objective of this Workshop was to to give them practitioners insight specially from the industry. Mr. Sandeep Rathod, Assistant General Counsel (VP) / Head Litigation and IP Policy (India & Emerging markets) at Mylan Laboratories Limited, Hyderabad? conducted this workshop. He took the students through the entire Patent Act & Rules and focused on those aspects which go for litigation before the Patent Office, Trial Courts, IPAB, High Court and the Supreme Court.

This Workshop was co-ordinated by Dr. Rohit Moonka, Course Faculty, IP Litigation under the aegis of Centre for IPR, Institute of Law.

ILNU Cultural Club organized the Cultural  Event (Scintilla 2017) on January 19, 2017.  The event was organised in the Auditorium C Block from 4PM onwards.  Students of various semester participated and performed in the event. It was a mesmerizing evening and all swayed to the tunes of music and danced to it too as it was time for Scintilla 2017. Dance, Drama, Music, Mime - all on one stage as students took up different forms to express themselves.  The performance was judged by well-known personalities.

He also interacted with the students.  The lecture was organized by the Centre for IPR for the students of Semester X.

Rajasthan High Court declared Rajasthan Judicial Service Examination results. Five ILNU students achieved top ranks in the exam. According to information students of Nirma University Citrakshi Singh, Vaibhav Soni, Shaili Parwal, Vikas Jain, Nidhi Beniwal five students were picked up in the judicial sector. Vice Chancellor of the University to be selected in the judicial area students have wished a bright future. It was significant association by Director and Dean, Prof.(Dr.) Purvi Pokriyal behind the success.
