ELYSIAN 2019 – the first edition of cultural and literary festival of Institute of Commerce was launched with the theme – “HIGH ON COLORS”. It was a two-day event scheduled on 12th and 13th February 2019 and it concluded in style with India’s RAW STAR – Darshan Raval performing live at Dome Ground witnessed by 4500 plus gathering of students making the venue of his performance too “HIGH ON COLORS”.

The event kick-started with an Inaugural Ceremony on 12th February 2019 at NIM Auditorium. Speaking at the event Mr. Dipesh Shah – Chief, GIFT-IFSC underlined the significance of “COMMITMENT” in life for scaling the heights in one’s career and also shared various work opportunities for the students of B. Com (Hons.) at IFSC. Prof Anup Singh –Director General presided over the function and appreciated the efforts of the Institute in organizing the fest.

The two day cultural and literary event had 9 competitions in its store – viz, Cash Clash – Stock Exchange Game, British Parliamentary Debate, Cadence – Music Competition, Plan O Pitch – Business Plan Competition, Drop A Beat – Dance Competition, Busibuzz – Business Quiz, Rangshala – Theatre Competition, Abracadabra – Pop Up Quiz, Melange – Fashion Show and the Star night on 13th February, 2019. All the competitions received overwhelming response and hence, screening rounds were conducted online to restrict the number for on campus semi-finals and finale.

All in all, there were 557 students who participated in various events of which 400 plus students belonged to various colleges and universities like PDPU, Ahmedabad University, GLS, HLCC, NRIBA, R J Tibrewal College, L D Enggineering College, L J College, J G College, BSE Institute, AMITY Global School, ITI, Shree Sarvajanik College, NIFT, St. Xaviers, Adani Institute, IIM Indore, MSU Baroda, NAEMD and Som Lalit The competition thus saw students not only from Ahmedabad, but also from Gandhinagar, Vadodara and Indore.

The first edition of the Literary and Cultural Fest was highly admired and successful!

The first of its kind – Run for Cause, a CSR Activity at the Nirma University campus was organized by Institute of Commerce with the support of its NGO Partner – Navjeevan Seva Sansthan. The fund raised by the registrations shall be utilized to provide scholarships to the students of underprivileged and poor section of the society. A total of 250 registrations were received for the 6.5 km run organised on 10th February 2019. A warm-up session in the form of Zumba dance was organized for participants. The winner in male category completed the run in 26 minutes 41 seconds and the winner in female category completed the run in 33 minutes. The winners were felicitated with Medals, Certificates and Vouchers. Tea and refreshments were served to the participant’s post run. Being the first event, which was conducted on a very short notice of 15 days and given that there were two marathons on the same day at Adani Shantigram and Sabarmati Riverfront, the efforts of the students involved is commendable and the event was highly successful.

Addressing the students of Institute of Commerce, Prof (Dr.) Ross Vardiar, visiting faculty at University of Amsterdam and CEO of “Royal Dutch Advisory”, Netherlands, shared his life experiences beginning from the incidents of racism that used to happen in apartheid South Africa.

Sharing how his parents supported him, how he chose his career paths and how he became an Individual that he is today, Dr. Ross underlined that one should not forget to make time for one’s loved ones. He advised students not to chase success or money. He emphasized that if one chooses happiness, both success and money follows.

He reminded students that the key to success starts with “them” and their pleasing personality in today’s competitive and digital world. “Be aware of Intolerance – This is a silent killer of knowledge and it will reveal to the world your exact stock of ignorance” was his personal advice to ICNU students.

The dean of ICNU, Prof. Udai Paliwal welcomed the guest Dr. Ross Vardiar and highlighted how Dr. Ross has been a source of motivation for young minds at various institutions of higher learning where he worked or visited for guest lecturing etc. in Africa and beyond. CS Karishma Butani delivered a formal vote of thanks.

The sports club of Institute of Commerce, Nirma University organized Two days Inter-University sports fest:  Kurukshetra from 7th and 8thFebruary 2019 as part of Elysian 2019. Twenty-four teams of boys & girls of various reputed universities across Ahmedabad participated in the event. As per designed format of the event each team has to play different sports like Dodge Ball, Box cricket, Futsal, Dangal v/s Dumbbell in the each round. In each level, all the winners were felicitated with cash prizes and certificates. The title winner of boys team was  GLS-IC and in girls team was  GLS-BBA.

Institute of Commerce, Nirma University (ICNU), a leading institute providing commerce education with specialisations in accounting as well as banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) signed an MOU with GIFT SEZ Limited, established as India’s first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) under Section 18 of the Special Economic Zone Act, 2005 (“SEZ Act 2005”).

The MOU sets out the framework agreed between GIFT SEZ and ICNU to operationalise cooperation the areas such as: introducing a course on International financial services centre (IFSCs); conducting programs in financial markets operations along with GIFT and other institutions based out of GIFT IFSC; conducting research in the field of International Banking, International insurance, International capital markets and organising seminars, guest lectures, workshops and conferences for creating awareness on International Financial Services Centre.

Speaking at the event Mr. Dipesh Shah, Chief – GIFT IFSC highlighted that the MOU shall foster common interests of GIFT SEZ and Nirma University and is expected to provide the employers with graduates that are equipped with necessary skills to handle BFSI operations. Outlining the proposed cooperation plan Mr Shah said that the two parties will jointly embark upon a campaign to raise awareness about IFSC activities, organize short training programs for various companies based out of GIFT City. He further appealed to the Nirma University Management to explore the possibilities to open up a Centre at GIFT CITY to be in close proximity with the market to serve their needs on a continuous basis.  

Dean of Institute of Commerce, Prof Udai Paliwal asserted the ICNU commitment to provide best quality education and prepare the students both for the employment and self-employment. Appreciating the GIFT SEZ willingness to work with ICNU in providing cutting edge education in the BFSI domain, he said that this cooperation will be fruitful not only for signatories to the MOU but various stakeholders by providing skilled human resources to the market and facilitating research in the areas of common interest.
