Seminar on CRISPR Cas9 in Genome Editing

This summary captures a one-day programme of presentations, panel discussions and interactive session at the seminar series on CRISPR/Cas9 in Genome Editing, organized by Institute of Science with Centre for Continuing Education programme, Nirma University, Ahmedabad, which took place on 2 March 2019. There are 65 total participants healing from different parts of Gujrat (CSMCRI, Navrachana University, KSV University, Indrashil University, Ahmedabad University and Nimra University etc) attended the seminar along with five eminent external speakers from prominent research institutes and industries (ICGEB, THSTI, CDFD, Reliance and Thermo Fisher) and various faculty members from the multiple institutes.

The seminar series began with opening remarks by the programme co-ordinator Dr. Kuldeep Verma, (Assistant Professor, Nirma University, Ahmedabad) on the current status, scope and application of precise genome editing technology in basic and applied research. The entire series was divided into the two sessions. The first talk begun with basic technology of CRISPR/Cas9 system and experimental methodology to achieve the highest success rate in genome editing by Dr. Arindam Chakraborty (Product Specialist, Thermo Fisher, Mumbai). The next speaker was Dr. Bhasker Bhadra, (Assistant Vice President, R&D Reliance Industries, Mumbai) who delivered his talk on high-throughput genome editing to improve the biofuel production in algae. Further, Dr. Nisheeth Agarwal, (Associate Professor, Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, Faridabad) discussed his current research on CRISPR interference for essential genes in mycobacterium.

After the lunch break, second session was chaired by Dr. D L Gupta (Assistant Professor, Nirma University, Ahmedabad). The first talk in this session was to improve the nutritional quality traits in rice by Professor M K Reddy (Group Leader International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi). Dr. Murali Dharan Bashyam, (Head of Molecular Oncology, Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, Hyderabad) delivered his talk on application of CRISPR/Cas9 technology in cancer treatment. Finally, Professor Sarat Dalai (Director, Institute of Science) conveyed his gratitude to all participants, invited speakers and panellists. He extended his thanks to the organizing committee members and their efforts, and expressed his satisfaction with the interactive nature of the discussions during the meeting.
