The Academic Development and Research (ADR) Cell, Nirma University organized a Two-day workshop on ‘Digital Era Tools for Teaching-Learning’ during September 15-16, 2017. The workshop was attended by 47 faculty members of universities, colleges and polytechnics from the Institutions of Higher Education from across different parts of India.

The workshop consisted of hands on session on “Information and Communication Technology (ICT)” tools that can be integrated in teaching-learning for faculty of higher education. Use of these tools will help the faculty to become ‘EdTech’ teacher and prepare them to deal with problems related to teaching-learning more proficiently.

There were sessions on: (i) Tools and Rubrics for designing flipped class rooms (ii) Tools for designing Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) (iii) Use of Moodle for managing eResources and administering eAssessment.

The induction training programme was organized for newly recruited faculty of Nirma University during May 29, 2017 to June 23, 2017. Forty five participants from the seven constituent Institutes under Nirma University participated in the training programme. The primary focus of the induction program was to discuss the nuances of effective classroom teaching and pedagogy, ways to make the classroom more interesting and interactive, guidelines for enhancing the personality and tips for improving capabilities for resource awareness and knowledge generation. Accordingly, the program was designed in two phases. Phase-I was of three weeks (May 29-June 17, 2017) and included sessions on: Effective classroom teaching and pedagogy, Personality development, Know your University. Phase-II was of one week (June 19-23, 2017) and offered discipline specific skill enhancement for the participants under the guidance of a mentor from their respective Institute. The programme content was delivered by forty five eminent resource persons through combination of theory/counselling, practical/hands-on-session, etc. The programme included site visit to Blind People’s Association, Vastrapur, Ahmedabad.

On March 25, 2017, Fulbright-Nehru Delegates (Senior Administrators from the US Universities) visited Nirma University Campus. The visit included activities like Nirma University campus tour; discussion on quality initiatives for teaching, learning, evaluation and administration taken by Nirma University; interaction with the Directors/Deans/Students of Nirma University. The delegates found the visit to be very fruitful and looked forward for collaboration with Nirma University in the future.

A two-day national seminar on ‘Quality Initiatives: Gateways and Pathways to Institutional Excellence’ was organized during March 03-04, 2017. The seminar was attended by approximately 100 delegates that included Directors, Heads, Deans and senior professors from the Institutions of Higher Education from different parts of India. The major emphasis of the seminar was discussion on initiatives leading to institutional excellence. This seminar was partly being funded by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore and was supported by the British Council, India Division. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. Ray Land, Director, Centre for Academic Practice (CAP), Professor of Higher Education, School of Education, Durham University, UK. There were interesting lecture by the eminent academicians, including (a) Dr. Sudhir Jain, Director, IIT, Gandhinagar (b) Dr. Dheeraj Sanghi, Dean, Academic Affairs and External Relations, IIIT Delhi (c) Dr. Sharad Mhaiskar, Pro-Vice Chancellor, NMIMS University, Mumbai (d) Dr. R. C. Natarajan, Director, IRMA (e) Dr. V. M. Gadre, Professor, IIT Bombay (f) Dr. Krithi Ramamritham, Former Dean, R&D, IIT Bombay. Apart from these sessions, a panel discussion session on “Quality Initiatives: Roles and Responsibilities” was also held. Dr. Anup K. Singh (Director General, Nirma University), Dr. T. Kishen Kumar Reddy (Director General, Pandit Dindayal Petroleum University), Dr. A. R. Jani (Director, Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre for Applied Research & Testing-SICART) were the panel members.

An inspirational talk on, ‘Vikash Yatra: Svayam Se Samaj Tak’ by Pujya Shri Morari Bapu was organized on December 16, 2016 (Friday) by the Academic Development and Research Cell, Nirma University. The illuminating and humanizing talk was attended by Dr. Karsanbhai Patel President, Nirma University and the entire teaching and non-teaching staff members of the University. In the talk Morari Bapu emphasized on improvising one’s own self to lead to the betterment of the society. He conversed real life examples for character, conduct and behavior building of individual. The talk was whole-heartedly received by the entire staff fraternity of the University.

The training programme for Office Assistants (Batch II) was organized during November 21, 2016 - November 26, 2016. The program was attended by thirty seven office staff from all the constituent Institutes and administration departments of Nirma University. The motive of the program was:(i) to train the participants with professional and personal growth through wider exposure to relevant knowledge and skills(ii) to enhance their ability to assist in organizational development and improvement more efficiently. Consequently, the programme included sessions like: how to bring effectiveness in day to day work?; rules and regulations of Nirma University; condition of service;procedure of purchase; delegation of power; budget preparation;admission and academic rules and regulations; audit process; computer skills; office file management;confidence building; time and stress management. The methodologies adopted for the training program were:case studies; discussions; management games; hands-on training; presentations by the participants etc.

A two day Training Programme on “Honing Research Publication Skills”was organized during October 07, 2016 - October 08, 2016. The program was attended by twenty participants from colleges across the different states of India and twenty four faculties from different constituent Institutes of Nirma University. The focus of the programme was: how to carry out literature review for effective research;organization of research manuscript; preparation of manuscript; use of manuscript writing tools like LaTex, MS Word, Mendeley desktop, plagiarism check, Shodhganga, etc. Consequently, the programme included sessions like: publish, publicise or perish; effective communication and presentation of research; improving quality of research papers using ICT tools; role of scopus in research and publication; scientometric analysis of publication and citation; role and use of statistics for writing and improving quality of research papers; what is plagiarism and how to avoid it?; managing reference using reference management tools. The sessions were conducted by experts from GE India Technology Centre, Benagarulu; IIT Bombay; INFLIBNET, Gandhinagar; IIT Gandhinagar and Nirma University.

A two-day training programme for faculty members from different universities, colleges, and polytechnics was organized by Academic Development and Research Cell during August 19, 2016 – August 20, 2016. The topics for the programme focused on: Education Philosophy – Present and Past, Changing Role of Faculty, Addressing Large Classrooms, Art of Classroom Presentation, Digital Era Tools for Teaching-Learning, Assessing Classroom Effectiveness, Effective Student Mentoring.Twenty faculty members from different constituent Institutes of Nirma University and twenty three faculty members from Institutes like Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Gandhinagar; D.D Thakar Arts and K.J.Patel Commerce College, Khedbhrama; LCIT College, Mehsana; S.B.Polytechnic, Savli; K.J. Institute of Engineering and Technology, Savli;and Charotar University of Science, Changa participated in the training program.

The induction training programme was organized for newly recruited faculty of Nirma University during May 23, 2016 – June 18, 2016. Twenty nine newly recruited faculty members of the constituent Institutes of Nirma University and ten participants from Smt. Shantaben Haribhai Gajera Shaikshanik Sankul, Amreli participated in the training programme.The objectives of the programme were to acquire skills of effective classroom teaching-learning; learn values to perform as a teacher, learner and mentor; and understand the basics of conducting research. The modules covered during the programme were: effective classroom teaching and pedagogy; education and University; character building and personality development; resource awareness and knowledge generation; developing discipline specific and research skills. Theory lectures, group discussions, panel discussions, micro teaching, presentation by participants, mentoring by senior faculty members were carried out during the programme. The programme included site visit to Muni Seva Ashram, Goraj.

A one day seminar on ‘Outcome Based Education’ was organized on June 18, 2016. The seminar was facilitated by Dr. S. C. Sahasrabudhe, former Deputy Director, IIT-Mumbai. The seminar was attended by thirty six senior faculty members from Institute of Technology and Institute of Pharmacy under Nirma University. The topics covered in the seminar broadly included: ‘Need for outcome based education’ and ‘Ways to implement outcome based education’.

Research Orientation Programme scheduled during June 22, 2015 to July 4, 2015 was inaugurated on June 22, 2015. The Two-Week Programme has been scheduled with the objective to strengthen the research activities and encourage faculty members to be active researchers. The programme has been organised under the aegis of Academic Development and Research (ADR) Cell.

The programme commenced with the address by Prof. K. Kotecha, Director, Institute of Technology and Director ADR Cell. He talked about the various initiatives and activities undertaken by the ADR Cell to promote research. He stated that the faculty members should focus on inter-disciplinary and collaborative research. He, further added that research is not just ‘re-search’ but there are various attributes to research and the faculty should put in efforts to blend research with teaching.

The Chief Guest of the programme was Prof. Anamik Shah, Vice- Chancellor, Gujarat Vidyapeeth. He delivered an inspirational anecdote from his student life and told the attendees about his transformation from a student leader to an ardent and successful researcher.

He motivated the faculty members through various enriching experiences of his life as a researcher. He quoted the examples of various initiatives undertaken by the great leaders of the country and discussed ‘Nai Talim’ by Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel’s efforts through establishment of Rural Research Centres to fortify agriculture research. He deliberated on different research centres, their challenges and successes and sharing of the research for the betterment of the society.

The inaugural address was followed by the address by Shri D. P. Chhaya, Director (A&GA), Nirma University. In his address, he deliberated on the different schemes of Faculty Development and Research Promotion Programmes being undertaken at the University. He stated that these programmes are more structured and advance as compared to the programmes organised in past.

He added that research is the heart of the University and as the expectation from the University is more to deliver solutions to the challenges being faced by the society, there is an immense need to emphasize on applied research instead of theoretical research. He informed the faculty members that the University has a structured research policy in addition to various research funding opportunities for the faculty.

The presidential address during the inaugural function of the programme was delivered by the Director-General of the University, Dr Anup K. Singh. In his motivating address, he inspired the faculty members to initiate the thinking process in their minds and stressed that the research should be more for the benefit and betterment of the society.  He said that the two sources of research problem are laboratory and life and instead of opting for commercial research the faculty should work for the society. He motivated the faculty members to be not let down by failures as success is only achieved by those who do not stop trying.

The programmes ended with a vote of thanks by Prof Manjunath Ghate, Director, Institute of Pharmacy. He extended gratitude to the Chief Guest and other dignitaries from the University for sparing valuable time from their busy schedule. He also expressed thanks to the ADR team and faculty members.

The Two-Week Faculty Orientation Programme has been scheduled at the University with the objective to further strengthen the teaching abilities and skills of the faculty members. The programme is scheduled at the University during June 22, 2015 to July 4, 2015 under the aegis of Academic Development and Research (ADR) Cell.

The programme was inaugurated on June 22, 2015.  The Chief Guest of the programme was Dr Sunil Shukla, renowned entrepreneurship consultant. The programme was also attended by Dr Anup K. Singh, Director General, Nirma University; Shri D. P. Chhaya, Director (A&GA), Nirma University and Dr K. Kotecha, Director, Institute of Technology.

The programme commenced with the address by Dr Kotecha who emphasized on student-engagement and bridging the gap between the students and the teachers. He stated that teaching can be made more engaging through innovative assignments, use of social media, project-based learning and the teacher should be a facilitator and mentor for the students. He stressed on the need of value-based education and motivated the teachers to inculcate the habit of asking questions in the students.

In his very informative speech, Shri D. P. Chhaya quoted Einstein and Aristotle and stressed on the code of conduct for a person as an individual, as a professional, as a leader and as a teacher.

He informed the faculty members about the objective of scheduling the Faculty Orientation Programme and stated that the programme aims to enhance and update the knowledge of the faculty members. In addition to class-room teaching, the faculty members should also have practical exposure to different aspects of learning. He also said that the University has initiated the process of Academic Audit and the deficiencies post the audit shall be remedied through such programmes in future. 

The Chief Guest of the inaugural programme Dr Sunil Shukla appreciated the efforts put-in by the management of the University in organizing such programmes. He further commended the University management for envisioning and investing in such development programmes as it highlights their seriousness and commitment towards education.  In his address he discussed about self- awareness towards learning and the need to be more sensitive towards the requirements of others.

The presidential address was delivered by the Director General of the University, Dr Anup K. Singh.  He stated that at the end of the programme the faculty members would be able to perform better in the class. He said that learning can change the behaviour, belief, attitude and perspective of a person. While discussing different aspects of learning, he dwelt on Life-long Learning, Life-wide Learning and Life-deep Learning.

The Programme ended with a vote of thanks by Prof Urmil Dave, the co-ordinator of the programme.

A four-week Induction Training Programme for the newly recruited faculty members of the University was inaugurated on June 1, 2015 by Dr Jayanti S. Ravi, the Commissioner of Labour, Commissionerate of Labour, Government of Gujarat. Dr Jayanti Ravi graced the occasion as the Chief Guest for the Inaugural Programme. The programme was also attended by Dr Anup K. Singh, Director General, Nirma University, Shri K.K. Patel, Vice-President (I/c) and COO, Nirma University, Shri D. P. Chhaya, Director (A&GA), Nirma University and the Heads of the constituent institutes of the University. The Induction Programme was organised under the aegis of Academic Development and Research Cell of the University.

The programme began with the address by Shri D. P. Chhaya. In his inspirational speech, he acquainted the newly recruited faculty members with the Vision and Mission and culture of the University besides the objective of organizing the programme. He stated that the society has high expectations with the academicians and they need to work hard to achieve that level of expectation. He said that the faculty should observe three Codes of Conduct: the conduct as an individual, as a professional teacher and as a leader. He stressed on the four pillars of education and teaching to be converted to learning.

Dr Jayanti S. Ravi began the address with the appreciation of the conduction of such programmes at the University. In her informative and engaging address, she stressed on the need of having alignment of the personal and institutional goals for the development and advancement of the individual as well as the institution. She stated that the Passive Teaching is a 'No' for the faculty member and should be transformed to 'Active Learning'.

Through various enriching anecdotes from her life, she emphasized on the need of having positive engagement of the faculty members in the development of the Courses; Learning and sharing of the knowledge; Student-engagement in Class-room and looking at the things differently.  She motivated the faculty members to absorb and soak all the knowledge with enthusiasm that they have the opportunity to learn through the Induction Programme. She quoted the three Ps of Purity, Perseverance and Patience. In addition, she said the capstone of the three Ps is 'love' and the teacher should have the capability of understanding the students' feelings.  She concluded by stating that the teachers have the strength of creating 'People of Excellence who can create a difference around them'.

In his presidential address during the inaugural function of the Induction Programme, the Director- General of the University, Dr Anup K. Singh stressed on the need of having the right attitude in addition to having right aptitude and skills. He said that as the teachers are in the profession of instruction, they simultaneously need to inspire the students also.  He further stated that the teachers can transform the students by creating a new paradigm of learning.

The Induction Programme is scheduled during June 1 to 27, 2015. During these four weeks various External and Internal expert lectures are scheduled in addition to different modules of learning for the attendee faculty members.

Faculty Orientation Programme was organized by Academic Development and Research Cell, Nirma University of two week from December 18-31, 2014. Total 32 faculty members including 24 participants from Institute of Technology, 05 participants from Institute of Law and 01 participant each from Institute of Management, Institute of Pharmacy and Institute of Architecture, respectively participated in the programme. Thirteen reputed resource persons were invited from professional fields from various parts of Gujarat. Thirteen faculty members from various constituent institutes of Nirma University delivered the sessions. Participants were appraised about the following:
1. Linkages between Society, Environment, Development and Education:
2. Personality development
3. Effective Classroom Teaching and Pedagogy Effective Classroom Teaching and Pedagogy
4. Knowledge about University: Governance of University and NAAC Accreditation
5. Research Funding: Applying for Research Grants
The sessions included theory, case studies, video lectures, etc. from the resource persons as well as group discussion, group exercises etc. by the participants. All the sessions were made quite interactive by whole-hearted participation from the participants. The evaluation of the learning of the participants was conducted by means of the examination. Very encouraging feedback about quality and conduction of the programme was received from the participants.
